PS ~
I have listed average actual fill/net weight for reference. I pack these jars full of product, but being whipped & aerated, the weight is difficult to nail down perfectly. A little goes A LONG way remember! We fill our jars to the top and weigh as we go, but the jar size (oz) and the net weight of the product (g) do not equate. A little goes a LONG way, and whipping tallow is what gives it the easily speadable and creamy texture that's so well loved. Whipped body butters will take up a lot of space, but don't weigh very much. If you'd rather have a product not whipped, check out a tallow balm instead! We are working on creating the same great benefits in a balm in addition to our whipped butter.
• Per FDA regulations, semi-solids must be measured by weight. I see a lot of people using the jar size on as their net weight.. or no weight listed at all. I try to be as transparent as possible, and I feel this is a large misconception! Net weight is the weight of the product without the packaging. Though homemade cosmetics aren't subject to FDA Regulations, we want to try our best to abide by labeling guidelines. We want our customers to know what they are getting!

Beef Tallow Benefits & Info
Beef tallow, a rendered form of beef fat, has been used in skincare for centuries. Tallow is defined as rendered ruminant fat. Cows are one of many ruminate animals. Its resurgence in popularity is due to its natural properties and numerous benefits for skin health. It may have started to go viral lately, and for good reason, but tallow is useful and incredible in so many ways. Below are some of the key advantages of incorporating beef tallow into your skincare routine. Animal Fat IS GOOD FOR YOU. BEEF is good for you!!
1. Rich in Nutrients - Beef tallow is packed with essential nutrients that are highly beneficial for the skin. It contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Not only is tallow rich in vitamins, but it has an incredible fatty acid profile that is beneficial for your skin. Beef tallow is composed of a variety of fatty acids, which contribute to its beneficial properties for skincare. Understanding the fatty acid structure of beef tallow can provide insights into why it is so effective in nourishing and protecting the skin.
Composition of Fatty Acids _ Beef tallow is primarily made up of triglycerides, which are esters formed from glycerol and three fatty acid molecules. The specific fatty acids present in tallow include:
Oleic Acid
Oleic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid, constituting about 40-50% of beef tallow. Known for its moisturizing properties, oleic acid is also found in olive oil and helps enhance skin permeability, allowing it to absorb moisture effectively.
Palmitic Acid
Making up around 25-30% of beef tallow, palmitic acid is a saturated fatty acid. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin's natural barrier, providing a protective layer that can help shield the skin from environmental damage.
Stearic Acid
Stearic acid, another saturated fatty acid, constitutes about 15-25% of beef tallow. This fatty acid is known for its cleansing properties and ability to provide a smooth, soft texture to the skin by acting as an emollient.
Linoleic Acid
Linoleic acid, an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid, is present in smaller amounts,5. approximately 2-3%. It plays a vital role in skin health by helping to maintain the integrity of the skin barrier and reducing inflammation.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)
CLA, a type of linoleic acid, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps combat free radicals and supports skin health by reducing oxidative stress.
Benefits of Fatty Acid Structure
The unique combination of these fatty acids in beef tallow gives it a composition similar to human skin sebum, which makes it highly compatible and easily absorbed into the skin. This
compatibility ensures that it can effectively provide moisture, enhance the skin barrier, and
support overall skin health without causing irritation or clogging pores.
Incorporating beef tallow into skincare routines can offer a natural, holistic approach to
maintaining healthy, vibrant skin due to its rich fatty acid profile. These vitamins help nourish
the skin, promote cell regeneration, and protect against environmental damage.
Benefits of Vitamins in Beef Tallow
Beef tallow is rich in essential vitamins that play a significant role in maintaining healthy skin.
Here is an overview of the benefits each vitamin provides when incorporated into skincare
routines:
Vitamin A
Skin Regeneration and Repair
Promotes Cell Turnover: Vitamin A is renowned for its ability to promote cell turnover,
which helps in renewing the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Enhances Skin Elasticity: It supports skin elasticity and firmness, contributing to a more
youthful and vibrant complexion.
Improves Texture: Regular use of Vitamin A can improve skin texture, making it smoother
and more even.
Vitamin D
Sun Protection and Healing
Supports Skin Barrier Function: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin's
barrier function, protecting against environmental damage.
Aids in Healing: It supports the healing of wounds and can reduce the appearance of scars.
Natural Defense: Enhances the skin’s natural defense against UV radiation, though it should
not replace sun protection measures.
Vitamin EAntioxidant and Moisturizing
Powerful Antioxidant: Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that helps combat free radicals,
reducing oxidative stress on the skin.
Deep Moisturization: Known for its moisturizing properties, it helps maintain skin hydration,
making it soft and supple.
Reduces Inflammation: It can soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation, benefiting
those with sensitive skin conditions.
Vitamin K
Healing and Circulation
Improves Circulation: Vitamin K is essential for proper blood circulation, which can help
reduce the appearance of dark circles and bruising.
Supports Healing: It aids in the skin's healing processes, making it valuable for post-surgery
recovery or treating minor skin irritations.
Skin Clarity: By promoting circulation and healing, Vitamin K contributes to a clearer, more
even skin tone.
By incorporating beef tallow into your skincare, you can harness the benefits of these vitamins
to support a healthier, more radiant complexion. These vitamins work synergistically to nourish
and protect the skin, providing both immediate and long-term benefits.
2. Highly Moisturizing
One of the standout benefits of beef tallow is its exceptional moisturizing properties. It contains
oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that is also found in olive oil, which helps to deeply hydrate
the skin. Tallow is about as close as you can get to the natural oils found in human skin, allowing
it to absorb easily and provide long-lasting moisture without clogging pores. That’s right, tallow
is non-comedogenic. Not only does it moisturize, but it works with your skin’s natural makeup to
repair damage. The incredible fatty acid profile aids in skin repair and skin cell production.
3. Supports Skin Barrier Function
Beef tallow helps strengthen the skin barrier, which is vital for protecting against irritants and
retaining moisture. By supporting the skin's natural barrier, tallow can help reduce dryness,
flakiness, and sensitivity, leading to smoother, more resilient skin.
4. Anti-inflammatory Properties
The anti-inflammatory properties of beef tallow can be beneficial for individuals with
inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. Its soothing effect canhelp calm irritated skin and reduce redness and swelling. Tallow works hard to repair skin
damage and even has anti-aging properties as the vitamins and minerals it contains support
collagen production.
5. Antioxidant Benefits
Tallow contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and palmitoleic acid, both of which have
antioxidant properties. These compounds aid in damage repair and help prevent pre-mature
aging. By incorporating beef tallow into your skincare, you can help protect your skin from
oxidative stress and maintain a youthful appearance.
6. Natural and Non-toxic
Unlike many commercial skincare products that contain synthetic ingredients and preservatives,
beef tallow is a natural, non-toxic alternative. It is free from harmful chemicals and additives,
making it a safe choice for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Although, it is ALWAYS
recommended and important to patch test your skin in a small area to ensure beef tallow (and
other oils) react well with your skin.
7. Eco-friendly and Sustainable
Using beef tallow in skincare is an environmentally friendly option. It utilizes a by-product of the
meat industry that might otherwise go to waste. By choosing beef tallow, consumers can
support more sustainable practices in skincare production.
In summary, beef tallow is a nutrient-rich, moisturizing, and natural ingredient that offers
numerous benefits for skin health. Its ability to support the skin barrier, provide antioxidant
protection, and soothe inflammation makes it a versatile choice for those seeking a holistic
approach to skincare.
8. Whipped Tallow vs Tallow Balm
When exploring beef tallow skincare products, you may come across terms like "whipped tallow"
and "tallow balm." Both are popular forms of tallow used for skincare, but they have distinct
characteristics and uses. Understanding the differences can help you choose the right product
for your skincare needs.
Whipped Tallow
Whipped tallow is crafted by blending beef tallow with other nourishing ingredients, such as
carrier oils or essential oils, and then aerating the mixture. This process gives the tallow a light, fluffy texture, similar to whipped cream or mousse. The whipping process makes it easier to
apply and spread evenly across the skin.
Key Characteristics of Whipped Tallow:
Texture: Light and airy, making it easier to apply and absorb.
Additional Ingredients: Often combined with other oils or essential oils to enhance its
properties and fragrance.
Usage: Ideal for those who prefer a lighter feel on the skin or want to incorporate additional
benefits from the supplementary oils.
Tallow Balm
Tallow balm, on the other hand, typically involves a simpler formulation. It is usually a blend of
rendered tallow with a minimal amount of other oils or beeswax, resulting in a thicker, more solid
consistency. This form retains more of the natural properties of tallow and offers a more
intensive moisturizing effect.
Key Characteristics of Tallow Balm:
Texture: Thicker and more solid, providing a rich and intensive moisture barrier.
Composition: Often has fewer added ingredients, focusing on the pure benefits of tallow.
Usage: Best for those seeking deep hydration, particularly in areas prone to severe dryness
or for use as an overnight treatment.
Choosing Between Whipped Tallow and Tallow Balm
The choice between whipped tallow and tallow balm largely depends on personal preference
and specific skincare needs. If you are looking for a lightweight option with added benefits from
essential oils, whipped tallow may be the right fit. However, if you need a potent moisturizer to
tackle extremely dry skin, tallow balm could be more suitable.
Ultimately, both forms offer the nourishing benefits of beef tallow, but the experience and
results can vary based on the formulation and added ingredients. Consider your skin type, the
climate you live in, and your personal texture preferences when selecting between these two
options.
9. Beef Tallow Storage Instructions & Care
When incorporating beef tallow into your skincare routine, it's essential to store these products
correctly to maintain their quality and effectiveness. After all, it is a natural product and a clean
skincare option, so it requires a little more care when storing if you’d prefer a longer shelf life.1.

3.
4.
Proper storage ensures that the tallow retains its beneficial properties and texture. Here's how
to store beef tallow products and what happens if they are not stored properly.
How to Store Beef Tallow Products
Cool, Dark Place
Store beef tallow products in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cabinet. Avoid direct
sunlight or heat sources, as these can cause the tallow to melt or degrade.
Airtight Containers
Use airtight containers to keep the tallow fresh and prevent exposure to air, which can
lead to oxidation. Glass and stainless steel containers are good options. Plastic works too
if you must, but it will degrade quicker.
Refrigeration
While not necessary for all tallow products, refrigeration can extend the shelf life,
especially if the product contains additional natural oils or ingredients. Refrigeration can
also help maintain a solid texture. If your tallow gets “soupy” due to heating, pop it in the
fridge or a cool place to re-solidify. Please remember, we as the seller have no control
over temp changes in shipping. Rest assured, if you tallow changes texture it still holds
the same benefits within the shelf life. Please reach out if you have any questions or
concerns regarding your tallow product.
Avoid Moisture
Keep tallow products away from moisture. Ensure that lids are closed tightly after each
use and avoid using wet hands or tools when handling the product.
Texture Changes When Not Stored Properly
Improper storage of beef tallow products can lead to changes in texture and effectiveness:
Melting and Separation
Exposure to heat can cause tallow to melt and separate from other ingredients, leading
to an uneven consistency. Once cooled, the product may not return to its original state. If
you have questions, please reach out. We are happy to help!
Graininess
If tallow experiences temperature fluctuations, it can develop a grainy texture. This
occurs when the fat crystals reform unevenly during cooling.
Rancidity
Exposure to air and light can cause the tallow to become rancid, affecting its smell,
texture, and efficacy. Rancid tallow loses its soothing and nourishing properties. You will
be able to tell when it goes rancid, and it’s not very easy to make that happen. The temps
have to be extreme, or it has to be left out for quite some time to open air and heat to
damage the product.
By following proper storage guidelines, you can ensure that your beef tallow skincare products
remain effective and pleasant to use, providing the maximum benefits for your skin. It’srecommended that you use Cowboy Lotion products within 6 months of the jar date. The date
your tallow product was made and packaged can be found on the container.
